With their wide international experience, several of our managers might have been equipped to assist. But Mr. Lipman knew that Guardsmark Vice President Bill Kinane had particularly solid ties to the Central Asian country, through a close relationship with the FBI’s legal attaché there.
During the course of his own 34-year career in the FBI, Bill had spent five years as a legal attaché in Moscowand had conducted investigations extensively throughout Europe with his counterparts.
Because a crucial aspect of the job is maintaining relationships with local police departments, Bill knew that his friend was well positioned to investigate.
Within two days of the initial call to Guardsmark, Bill’s contact had uncovered sufficient information to dispatch local police to apprehend the con-men.
In the meantime, after receiving instruction to contact Bill’s attaché friend, the women were made confident that they were in fact not in trouble with the government. Local officials subsequently facilitated their transport to the American embassy, where the special consulate expedited a safe return to the United States.
